How to Make Your Own Backyard Ice Rink Boards
Making your own backyard ice rink boards is a great way to get into the winter spirit! Not only is it fun, but it can also be a great family project. You will need two 2×4 boards, a drill, screws, saw, and level. Follow these simple steps to make your very own backyard ice rink boards!
- Cut your 2×4 boards to the desired length. You will need two boards that are the same length.
- Drill holes into the boards, spaced about a foot apart.
- Screw the boards together, making sure that the holes line up.
- Use the saw to cut any excess off of the boards.
- Level off the ground where you will be placing your ice rink boards. This will ensure that your rink is level and even.
To make the cuts, you will need to saw the boards into two pieces that are each 3 feet long. Make sure that the cuts are straight and even, so that the boards will be level when you assemble them.

Drilling the holes is a very important step in making the boards for your backyard ice rink. If you don’t drill the holes correctly, the boards may not be stable and could wobble when you skate on them.
To drill the holes, use a drill with a 1/2 inch diameter bit. Drill the holes about 1 inch from the edge of the board, and make sure that they are evenly spaced.
Once you have drilled the holes in the boards, it’s time to assemble them. Place one board on a flat surface, and then put the other board on top of it so that the holes line up. Make sure that the boards are level before you proceed any further.
Next, use screws to secure the two boards together. Screw them in at an angle, so that they will be more stable when you skate on them. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, or they may break through the surface of the board.
If you want, you can add a coat of paint or sealant to protect your backyard ice rink boards from weather damage. Make sure to let them dry completely before using them!
Now that you know how to make the cuts, drill the holes and assemble the boards, it’s time to put your new backyard ice rink together! Make sure your level is handy so you can get everything nice and straight. It might be helpful to have a friend help you out with this part – they can hold the boards in place while you screw them together. Once everything is tight, give your rink a good push to make sure everything is sturdy and secure. Then, it’s time to fill ‘er up!
If you don’t have a hose long enough to reach your backyard ice rink, no worries – you can always use buckets or pots to transport the water from your faucet. Fill ‘er up, add some cold weather loving plants around the perimeter (we’re partial to evergreens), and you’re good to go!
Now that you know how to make backyard ice rink boards, it’s time to get out there and enjoy the winter weather! These boards are strong and sturdy, so you can enjoy skating on your very own backyard rink for years to come.
